Home improvements for the kids
3 March 2008
If you own a house and are starting a family, you may be considering moving to a larger home. Moving isn't an option for everyone, and it may be that by taking out a home improvement loan you could make a family home without needing to move.
If you need more rooms
Having enough bedrooms is a key concern for a family home, likely to be a source of many family arguments if supply doesn't meet demand. It may be possible to renovate your home to reduce the size of other rooms in the house in order to install an extra bedroom. This isn't an option for everyone, but a home improvement loan to gain another bedroom may end up being a sound investment for when you do wish to sell.
If you have safety concerns
Making your home child-safe can be an expensive pursuit, but you arn't the only parent with such concerns. There are many buyers who would value child-safety features in a property, so you need not think that money spent on making renovations to doorways, surface edges, major kitchen appliances and other possible sources of injury can't be a sound investment in the value of your home.
If your child needs space to play
If you don't already have a reasonably sized backyard, there isn't much that renovations could achieve to provide your child with the space to play outside. You can, however, make renovations to your child's room that may provide a sense of outdoor space. Larger windows will provide natural light and a windowsill garden is fun for children to tend to, while also being an attractive addition to the exterior of your house. You may also want to consider buying easy-to-store furniture for your child, or furniture that doubles as a storage space, freeing up the greatest possible amount of room when they are playing.
If you need to move anyway
Even if you decide you need to move to accommodate your family, you may only find a home that is large enough and in the right location, without providing any of the other things your family wants. A home improvement loan could solve the problem, giving you license to make the yard into a playground, or even reduce the amount of noise that can come from the kids' rooms. Families have different needs to childless homebuyers, and if you don't want to limit your options, a home improvement loan could turn the house you settle for into the home of your dreams.
